TODAI-JI TEMPLE: A Japanese Buddhist temple in the city of Nara, dedicated in 752, eleven years after BUDDHISM was proclaimed the official state religion of JAPAN. It contains an enormous statue of the BUDDHA, called the Dai Butso, or Great Buddha. (See also Japan article).
